Abstract
892,898. Sewing machines. SANKEY & SONS Ltd., JOSEPH. Nov. 30, 1960 [Sept. 5, 1959], No. 30373/59. Class 112 In a sewing machine in which the needle bar is slidably mounted in a member so as to rock with the latter in a vertical plane, said member is carried by a slidable part which is adjustable between an upper position in which it rocks about an axis situated above the plane of the work support, and a lower position in which it rocks about an axis situated below the planes of the work support. A needle bar 8 is slidable in a block 10 and is driven by a crank 7 on the arm shaft 6 of the machine. Block 10 is formed with an arcuate rib 11 slidably disposed between a pair of arcuate ribs 12, 13 on a stationary block 38, whereby block 10 oscillates on reciprocation of the needle bar. A presser bar 16, slidable in block 10, is biased downwardly by a spring 18 and carries a presser foot 17. A bar 15 is pivoted at one end, at 22, to the machine frame, its other end is forked, as at 23 to straddle the presser foot 17, and it is biased upwardly by a spring 24. Bar 15 is connected by a link 31 to one arm 30 of a bell-crank lever pivoted at 28 to the presser bar. A pin 25 on the needle bar is adapted, during the upward stroke of the latter, to engage the other arm 26 of the bell-crank lever, whereby the presser bar is raised and bar 15 is lowered. End 23 thereby engages the work while the needle and the feeding presser foot 17 are disengaged therefrom. Block 38 may be raised or lowered by a lever 39, pivoted at 41 to the machine frame and biased upwardly by a spring 50, to position the centre of curvature of rib 11 either above the work for normal feeding, or below the work for reverse feeding. A block 47, formed with a notch, the respective edges 45, 46 are engageable by a pin 44 on lever 39, is movable horizontally by rack and pinion means 48, 49 to regulate the stitch length.
