Abstract

A composition for coating glass fibres comprises an aqueous composition containing a liquid copolymer of butadiene and styrene or a substituted styrene in 80:20 ratio, a silane coupling agent and a lubricating agent for the glass fibres. The copolymer may be an emulsion while preferred proportions are 0,5 to 5% copolymer, 0,1 to 2% silane and 0,05 to 2% lubricant, the remainder being water. Vinyl toluene, dichlorostyrene and paramethyl styrene are specified substituted styrenes, vinyl tris betamethoxyethoxy silane and vinyl trichlorosilane specified silanes and tetraethylene pentaminepelargonic and condensate made soluble by acetic acid, a tetraethylene pentamine fatty acid condensate having five alkyl methalkyl chains directly substituted on the nitrogen atoms, tetraethylene pentamine stearic acid condensate solubilized with acetic acid, an amide of a vegetable oil fatty acid, and fatty acid amines are specified lubricating agents.
