Abstract
891,615. Ignition systems. BENDIX CORPORATION. July 28, 1959 [Aug. 19, 1958], No. 25923/59. Class 7(4). [Also in Group XXXV] An ignition system has a source of electrical transient pulses including storage condenser means 29, 30 adapted to be charged through rectifiers 21, 24 until the condenser voltage attains the discharge voltage of a control gap 26 and then to discharge a high frequency electrical pulse into the input of an electrical device 11 for dividing the energy of the pulse into a plurality of simultaneous output pulses each delivered to a spark discharge circuit, the electrical device comprising a plurality of inductance coils 32, 35 (Fig. 1) magnetically linked together the coils being so oriented relative to their magnetic linkage and the ends of the coils being so connected that the flux induced by an electrical current pulse through any coil from the input induces a voltage in at least another coil in a direction from the input to the corresponding spark discharge circuit, so that a first discharging circuit induces in at least another spark discharge circuit a voltage additive to that impressed by the source and results in energization thereof as shown. Two equal and simultaneous pulses flow from the divider 11 to spark discharge devices 12 and 15. The core 36 may be made for example of laminated silicon iron or of core materials of the type sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Ferramic". Preferably core 36 is of such character that it is saturated upon the discharge of one of the branch circuits of the pulse divider. The pulse divider 41 shown in Fig. 2 may be connected to the supply circuit in place of the divider 11 shown in Fig. 1. Divider 41 is made up of three coil pair units identical with pulse divider 11 of Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 there is shown a pulse divider 47 employing a continuous toroidal core 49. Two embodiments of inductively linked or air-core pulse dividers are described. The spark discharge devices 15 and 12 are of the gap shunted type shown for example in Specification 711,778.
