Abstract

891,582. Mineral coated paper &c. DOW CORNING CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 30568/60. Class 96. Paper is made suitable for offset, colour printing, &c. by coating it with a mixture of 30 to 70% of water and 70 to 30% of a mixture of: (a) 75 to 90% of a pigment, e.g. clay, titanium dioxide calcium carbonate, -sulphate, or -sulphite, barium sulphate, satin white, zinc sulphide, zinc oxide, diatomaceous earth, iron oxide, Malachite green, red lead, carbon black, or cadmium sulphide, (b) 10 to 25% of starch, and (c) 1 to 15% on the weight of the starch of an alkali metal salt of a mono-organosilanol, the organic group(s) attached to silicon atom being aliphatic hydrocarbon of less than 4 carbon atoms, the pH value of the composition being maintained above 7 until it is dried on the paper. The salts may be of the formula RSi(OM) 3 , RSiO 1/2 (OM) 2 or RSiO(OM), where R is the organic group, and M the alkali metal. The salt may also contain some silicon atoms with silcarbane linkages, and minor proportions of diorganosilanediol salts of the formula R 2 Si(OM) 2 may be present. An example mentions the sodium salt of monomethyl silanol with a ratio of sodium to silicon of about 1. Pine oil, sulphonated oils, wax emulsions, soaps, anti-foam agents and dyes may also be included.
