Abstract

Coating-compositions and coloured writing pencils comprise lead cyanamide as a pigment, together with a suitable vehicle or binding agent. The lead cyanamide may be mixed with an adulterating agent such as clay or calcium carbonate, or with another pigment, such as a blue pigment made by the process described in Specification 444,110. Coatings containing lead p cyanamide are stated to possess anti-corrosive properties. The lead cyanamide may be made by treating commercial calcium cyanamide with water containing a sufficient quantity of a heavy metal salt to precipitate sulphide impurities, filtering, and adding a solution of a lead salt, e.g. lead nitrate, when lead cyanamide is precipitated in the presence of excess of monocalcium cyanamide or of a base such as ammonia. According to examples: (1) a paint comprises lead cyanamide and linseed oil varnish; (2) a paint comprises lead cyanamide, a cellulose ester and water; (3) a coloured writing pencil is made from lead cyanamide, clay, calcium carbonate and gum arabic solution; (4) an anti-corrosive paint comprises lead cyanamide, titanium black and linseed oil; (5) a paint comprises lead cyanamide, chrome yellow and linseed oil varnish; (6) a paint comprises lead cyanamide, an organic yellow pigment, linseed oil varnish and stand oil.ALSO:Coating-compositions and coloured writing pencils comprise lead cyanamide as a pigment, together with a suitable vehicle or binding agent.
