Abstract
Finely divided fillers or pigments, e.g. silica, titania, alumina, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate and china clay are surface modified by treatment with a silane of the general formula RnSiR1mY(4-m-n), where R is a monovalent organic group containing at least one amine group in which the nitrogen is separated from the silicon atom by at least three carbon atoms, R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Y is an alkoxy or substituted alkoxy group, n is 1, 2 or 3, m is 0, 1 or 2 and m+n is not greater than 3. The silane may be added directly to the filler or pigment and intimately mixed therewith or it may be added as a solution in water or an organic solvent and the solvent removed by evaporation. 1-200% by weight of the silane is used based on the weight of filler or pigment. The filler or pigment may also be treated with about 1-20% of a silane of the general formula RgxSi(ORh)4-x, where Rg is a hydrocarbon group, preferably unsaturated, Rh is an alkyl or substituted alkyl group with preferably not more than 4 carbon atoms, and x is 1, 2 or 3. The treated filler or pigment may also be dyed with dyes which will react with an amino group. Specification 209,723, 460,224, 733,471, 740,833, 772,030, 774,925, 775,308, 780,591, 781,930, 785,120, 785,222, 826,405, 838,337, 882,058 and 882,067 are referred to.ALSO:Finely divided pigments, e.g. lithopone are surface modified by treatment with a silane of the general formula RnSiR1mY(4-m-n), where R is a monovalent organic group containing at least one amine group in which the nitrogen is separated from the silicon atom by at least three carbon atoms, R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Y is an alkoxy or substituted alkoxy group, n is 1, 2 or 3, m is 0, 1 or 2 and m+n is not greater than 3.
