Abstract
Mono-, di-, or tri-chlorosilane substantially free from borane and/or chlorinated borane impurities is obtained by adding one, or more, organic, or inorganic, substances, the molecules of which contain a nitrogen, phosphorous, oxygen, chlorine, or fluorine atom and a lone pair of electrons, to form an addition compound with the impurities, and recovering the partially chlorinated silane by distillation. Suitable substances are cyanogen chloride, propionitrile, cyanamide, nitrobenzene, dimethyl aniline, azobenzene, caprolactam, benzaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, dimethylglyoxime, valerolactam, dioxan, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus tri-, or penta-, chloride, diethyl phosphine, triphenyl-chloro- or fluoro-, methane, aluminium chloride, or ferric chloride. The partially chlorinated silane may be shaken with the substance in a quartz flask at -150 DEG to +20 DEG C., and is distilled at atmospheric pressure.
