891,119. Delivering measured quantities of granular materials. AIR CONDITIONING & ENGINEERING (N.I.) Ltd., and BROWN, O. S. Dec. 17, 1959 [Jan. 10, 1959], No. 987/59. Class 106(5). A device for dispensing animal foodstuffs comprises a measuring chamber 11 of variable volume which is rotatable between a position in which an opening 11a communicates with a supply hopper 10 and a position in which the opening 11 delivers the measured contents of a shoot 12 and part of the wall of the housing for the chamber consists of resilient fingers 37 which extend for the length of the chamber and prevent jamming of the material being measured. One 14 or both ends of the chamber may be adjustable by screw-threaded means to vary the chamber capacity and an indicator 25 may show the adjusted value. The chamber is operated either by a handle 36, remotely by a cable 35 or by power and is returned by a spring 22. The fingers 37 are inherently resilient or are pivoted and spring-loaded. Wings 37b at the upper ends of the fingers slide on each other and reduce the escape of material when the fingers yield. The main hopper 10 may communicate with the measuring chamber through a subsidiary hopper 13, the two hoppers being separated by a spring- loaded plate 38b which is pivoted at 39 and is released from a closed position by operating a latch 44 by a mechanical or fluid pressure means or by a solenoid controlled by time switches. The plate 38b will close as the subsidiary hopper empties and a plate 41 on the pivot 39 will move from the horizontal to the vertical position to indicate the need for replenishment. A vibrating mechanism may be fitted in the hopper or in the ducting leading to it.
