Abstract

890,504. Making boxes. DAVIDSON & SONS Ltd. C., and PEACOCK, A. M. Jan. 28, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 33609/57. Class 18. Apparatus for forming cardboard boxes from blanks e.g. as in Fig. 1 comprises a platform 27 having an aperture 28 positioned below a male former 26 detachably mounted on a plunger 25, and a female former beneath the aperture 28 having opposed side members 42 and end members 35, the latter with folding means 57, as well as means for adjusting the positions of the side and end members, arranged so that on descent of the plunger 25 the blank is pushed through the aperture 28 folding its side panels 2 about its base 1, wings 6 normal to the side panels 2 and end panels 3 to lie against the wings 6. The centre side member 42 of each set carries a device 61 to grip a side panel 2 of the box during folding, while each outer side member 42 has a spring latch 60 to prevent the box being withdrawn from the female former on the upward stroke of the male former 26. Means for folding over end panel extension flaps 8 to stick together the (shaded) pressure-sensitive adhesive treated portions comprise angled members 57 having resilient sealing pads and attached to a shaft mounted above each end member 35 linked by a rack and pinion to an air cylinder. In one modification, the male former comprises slidable blocks located on top of the plunger base which are actuated to move sideways as the plunger approaches the bottom of its stroke to secure the end panel extension flaps, in conjunction with modified folding means. Such a male former may be provided with heating means to permit the use of heat-sensitive adhesives. In a further modification, one end member of the female former has limited float movement, under influence of an hydraulic ram, to secure the flaps, the male former being a solid block also having slight float.
