890,412. Q value measurement. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 18, 1959 [June 18, 1958], No. 19540/58. Class 37. Apparatus for measuring the Q value of a resonant micro-wave device comprises a highfrequency oscillator 1 of e.g. 10,000 Mc/s. amplitude modulated at 2 from a calibrated low-frequency oscillator at e.g. 1 Mc/s. to energize e.g. a test resonator 4 coupled to an output 8. The standing waves produced are measured by a standing wave detector 5 at the resonator input and applied to a panoramic oscilloscope 6 displaying the sum and difference frequency side bands and the fundamental against a time-base representing frequency. The Q value of the resonator may be computed from the relative standing wave ratio of the side-bands and carrier of the modulated wave. The resonant element may be a transmission cavity, and the relative outputs of carrier and side-bands at the input and output may be compared for the calculation of Q from the modulation change due to the introduction of the cavity.
