890,159. Printing machines. ROLAND OFFSETMASCHINENFABRIK FABER & SCHLEICHER A.G. April 3, 1959 [April 5, 1958], No. 11396/59. Class 100(2) In a perfecting sheet printing machine wherein two or more printing units each for printing the sheets on one side only are so arranged that the sheets travel through the units in opposite directions but along substantially parallel paths, the delivery end of the first unit is placed substantially adjacent to the feeding end of the following unit and a device transfers the sheets from the delivery end of the first unit to the feeding end of the following unit in a reverse-faced position but leading by the same sheet end. As shown a rotary perfecting machine has two twocolour offset printing units 20, 23. Sheets from a stack 1 are fed into the unit 23 and there printed on one side. Each sheet is then carried by a gripper chain 5 beneath the inking mechanism 6 of the unit 23 to a cam-operated, oscillating feeder 12 having a gripper 13 which transfers the sheet from the gripper chain 5 to one of a number of gripper bars 15 mounted between endless chains 16, 17. The chains 16, 17 pass over chain wheels 18 adjacent to the oscillating feeder 12 and chain wheels 19 adjacent to a feed table 21 for the printing unit 20. The sheets 22 hang down from the grippers 15 and are dried by a drying device 24 before being deposited, printed side down, on the table 21 whence they are fed into the unit 20 and printed on the reverse side. The sheets are taken from the impression cylinder of the unit 20 by a chain conveyer which passes beneath the inking device of the unit 20 and deposits the sheets on a stack 25. The chain wheels 18, 19 are driven step by step in synchronism with the printing units 23, 20 respectively and owing to a sag in the lower runs of the chains 16, 17 it is unnecessary for the printing units always to operate in synchronism. The amount of sag in the chains is detected by a feeler 26 which is connected to means for controlling the running speeds of the printing units 20, 23 whereby the amount of sag is kept constant despite variations in the running speed of one or the other printing unit.
