890,060. Compressor valves. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 33932/59. Class 8(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve closure member for a plurality of ports provided in a reciprocatory gas compressor, e.g. for a refrigeration system, is constituted by a relatively thin plate having an annular rim portion integral with which are tongue portions formed with thickened end portions to overlie the ports. The plate 50 shown in detail in Fig. 4 is for the outlet ports 48 of the compressor, and the centres of the circular thickened end portions 56 of the tongue portions 52, 54 lie on two concentric circles to correspond to the outlet ports 48 provided in a plate 44 backing an inlet valve plate 38 ; the latter is similar to the plate 50 but has the centres of the circular thickened end portions lying on one circle to correspond to the inlet ports 37. The plate 50 is backed by a cylinder cover 66 provided with an outlet passage 64, and this cover and the backing plate 44 have curved portions 60 and 46, respectively, for limiting the movement of the tongue portions of the plates 50 and 38. The compressor has a closed crank case 14 provided with a gas inlet 26, and two oppositely disposed cylinder housings 12 each of which has a cylinder liner 28 spaced from the outer wall of the housing to leave an annular space 30 therebetween, the latter being in communication with the interior of the crank case by means of kidney-shaped ports 36 and with the cylinder space by means of the inlet ports 37 which are in a flange 34 of the liner 28. Since during operation of the compressor the inlet gas flowing through the annular space 30 provides cooling for the piston skirt no lubricant is necessary for the piston 80, the latter having a groove housing three segments of a carbon piston ring 82 which is spring- pressed into engagement with the liner 28.
