889,885. Grinding. SOC. DES LUNETIERS COTTET, POICHET, TAGNON & CIE. April 7, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 12406/60. Class 60. A machine for three-dimensional copy-cutting of a workpiece F comprises two portions, one portion of the machine having two spindles B, E which are mounted parallel to each other, rotated synchronously and carry respectively, a model A and the workpiece F, the second portion T carrying a follower G and grinding wheel H, and means for moving the second portion relative to the first. The spindles are synchronously rotated by worm gearing C beltdriven from a motor AC and, when the workpiece is to be a copy of the model and have, for example, a spherical surface, the follower G is freely rotatable in the second portion T which is pivotally mounted on, or connected by a parallelogram to a slide U movable by a screw W rotated by gearing X driven from a motor AD; the grinding wheel and follower may be of the same or different radii so that the workpiece produced is the same or of a different size to the model. The workpiece may be produced with a surface differing from that of the model by rotating the follower synchronously with the model by a flexible shaft R or other drive. For example, a progression toroidal surface may be produced on the workpiece by having a progressive surface on the model and a toroidal surface on the follower. The movement of the slide U may be reversed or stopped by limit switches and the motors AC, AD controlled so that grinding is carried out at a constant circumferential speed; a single motor may replace the motors AC, AD. Abrasive liquid is supplied to the workpiece and the spindle E is vertically adjustable to control the depth of cut. A plurality of workpiece-carrying spindles may be provided to enable simultaneous production of a plurality of workpieces. In a further embodiment the grinding wheel and follower are mounted on a common shaft parallel to the worms C driving the spindles.
