Abstract

889,804. Fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 32043/57. Class 103 (1). A fluid pressure-operated braking mechanism for a trailer vehicle, and of the kind in which the maximum pressure attainable in the brake actuating means is dependent upon the vehicle load, comprises a control valve 1 in a compressed-air, or vacuum, line 3 to the brakeactuating means 4, the valve 1 including a movable valve element 13 coacting with a valve seat 14 to control the fluid flow through said line 3 and spring-urged away from the seating, and pressure-responsive means sub. jected to the pressure in line 3 and acting against the spring 20 to close the valve, the spring 20 acting between the valve element 13 and a member 18 which is movable with a sprung part of the vehicle relatively to an unsprung part. The valve 1 is mounted on the platform 2 of the trailer vehicle, and a roller 19 on the tubular thrust member 18 is lifted by a lever 22 pivoted to a rod 24 in turn hinged to a member 25 fixed to the wheel axle. A diaphragm 7 and the element 13 are attached to a rod 15 and collar 21 which are thrust upwards by a coil spring 20. If the trailer is unladen, the distance from wheel axle to platform 2 is the maximum, shown in Fig. 1; member 18 projects the maximum and spring 20 has minimum compression. When the tractor servo is operated, vacuum is supplied to cylinders 4 through line 3 and passages 9, 10, 11 and 12 of valve 13, 14, and lower part 6b of the diaphragm chamber, to apply the brakes. This vacuum will also act on the underside of diaphragm 7, and when the pressure differential so created over the diaphragm overcomes the loading of the spring 20 the element 13 moves down on to seat 14 to interrupt the vacuum to the trailer brake cylinders 4 and limit the degree of braking. Since the trailer is unloaded the compression of spring 20 is relatively light and the degree of permissible braking is correspondingly limited. Loading of the vehicle lowers the platform 2, and the lever 22 is rocked clockwise about its pivot on the bracket 23, whereby member 18 is moved upwards in tube 17 to compress spring 20. Hence, a higher degree of vacuum is needed to overcome the spring loading on the diaphragm, giving a correspondingly increased degree of braking.
