889,356. Determining liquid levels. MARCONI INTERNATIONAL MARINE COMMUNICATION CO. Ltd. May 10, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 16960/59. Class 37. A sounding device for measuring shallow depths of water beneath a ship comprises three electrodes 1-3, Fig. 1, two of which, 1, 2, are widely spaced in comparison with 2 and 3, and an electrical bridge arrangement, Fig. 3, wherein the resistance between electrodes 2 and 3 serves as a reference. The bridge, which may be energized by A.C. of 100-200 volts at 50-60 cycles includes a variable resistor R2 which may be adjusted for zero output in either very shallow or very deep water, the former being more accurate. The output from the bridge is applied to an instrument J calibrated in depth via linear and logarithmic amplifiers A, LA and a cathode follower CF. Electrode 1, Fig. 2, of brass, coated in turn with silver and rhodium and having a conical portion IG with a screwed extension ID is drawn tightly into an insulated seating IE in a member IA welded to the ship's bottom, and is in effect, recessed into the hull. In order to reduce the short-circuiting effect of a metal hull, the hull may be coated with a bitumastic compound for 6 feet around the electrodes. Specification 121,434 is referred to.
