Abstract

Textile materials are treated by passing them through a column of solid discrete particles fluidized by means of the treating fluid, which is made to impinge on both sides of the material substantially normally to the plane of the material by means of pressure nozzles or slits. The textile material is a web, yarn or fabric of <PICT:0889211/IV (c)/1> natural or artificial fibrous material. As shown, the textile material 1 passes around guide rollers 2, 3 and 4, so that it passes downwards through one limb 5a, and upwards through the other limb 5b of a U-shaped column. This column contains a bed of solid discrete particles, e.g. of silica, sand, glass beads or porcelain beads, which are kept in a fluidized state by supplying fluidizing medium through the banks of nozzles 7 and 8, the nozzles 8 being mounted in a central partition in the form of a hollow chamber 6. 9 is the fluid storage tank, 10 is the fluid circulation pump, and 11 a heat exchanger. Fluid and also any solid particles leaving the bed may be recirculated. The fluidizing medium may be a solution of dye, scouring liquors, bleaching liquors, or oxidising liquors, or may be a gas, e.g. air or super-heated steam. The fluid jets from the nozzles preferably impinge with the same velocity on both sides of the textile material. The examples describe the dyeing of cotton fabrics by the method of the invention.
