Abstract

888,990. Impregnating webs. WEST POINT MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 3, 1958, No. 28240/58. Class 140. A vacuum extraction tube 32 for removing excess liquid impregnant from a non-woven fabric web supported on an endless wire screen, has a flat upper surface 46 having a slot 48 extending longitudinally therein and communicating with the interior of the tube, the width of the surface 46 on one side of the slot 48 being at least five times as wide as the slot. The tube 32 is rectangular in section and comprises two halves bolted together at 38 along abutting flanges 40, one end of the tube being closed by a disc 54 having a drain pipe and a connection to a manometer, and the other end having an adapter 62 engaged by a conduit 64 leading to a blower for producing a vacuum in the tube 32. The wire screen and the supported web pass over the surface 46, which should be of polished chromium, before the screen and web separate. The impregnating apparatus is similar to that described in Specification 703,574 and the tube 32 passes at each end through bars and rests on pads on a frame which supports the whole apparatus. The speed of passage of the screen may be coordinated with the rate of formation of the web.
