Abstract
888,796. Printing on curved surfaces. MASCHINENFABRIK WINKLER FALLERT & CO. A.G. Feb. 22, 1960 [March 13, 1959], No. 6168/60. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXII] Expansible mandrels 2, 3, for supporting hollow bodies 44 during printing or varnishing are controlled by a mechanism which ensures that the mandrels are expanded and collapsed at the appropriate times to grip and release the bodies. The mandrels 2, 3 are mounted on an intermittently rotatable turntable 1. Each mandrel has a sleeve 4, Fig. 4, carrying a bush 7 supported by ball bearings 5, 6. A member 9 carrying a tapered needle 10 is slidable within a bush 8 located in the bush 7. The member 9 is connected with a lever 12 engaging a fork 14 secured to a bolt 15. The needle 10 engages tapered surfaces on segments forming the expansible mandrel to expand the mandrel, the needle being pressed outwardly by a spring 16 to expand the mandrel. In operation, the turntable 1 is stopped with the bolt 15 of one mandrel 2 in axial alignment with a bolt 21, Fig. 2, of an air cylinder 18 connected to a valve 26 controlled by a cam 32. The valve 26 opens to cause the bolt 21 to press on the bolt 15, thereby collapsing the mandrel 2 to allow a hollow body 44 to be manually or automatically mounted on the mandrel. Further rotation of the cam 32 causes closure of the air valve 26 to permit mandrel expansion. The turntable rotates further, such that the hollow body 44 passes a printing station 38 where it is printed in one or more colours. The mandrel is collapsed to permit withdrawal of the hollow body when the bolt 15 is in axial alignment with a bolt 22 of an air cylinder 19 connected to a valve 27 controlled by a cam 27. If a hollow body 44 is not present on the mandrel 3 when passing the printing station 38, a limit switch 43 is not actuated and the circuit to an electromagnet 29 remains closed, such that air flows through a pipe 28 to an air cylinder 20 to collapse the mandrel. Hydraulic rams may replace the air cylinders 18, 19 and 20.
