Abstract

<PICT:0888768/III/1> A settable material is applied to a surface by continuously moving the outlet orifice of a nozzle positioned at one end of a nozzle body mounted on a support and containing a quantity of the material relatively to the support, in a predetermined path over and close to the surface, and controlling the flow of material from the nozzle at its point of emergence therefrom, in timed relation with the movement of the nozzle. As shown, a nozzle body 6 is mounted in gimbals on a suspension ring 2 carried by a plate 1. The upper portion of the body 6 contains a pneumatic cylinder 7 in which a piston 9 may be moved by compressed air admitted through passages 7a or 7b. The piston 9 is attached to a needle 19 which controls the emission from a nozzle 12 of rubber compound, which is circulated under pressure through a lower chamber 6a in the body 6, through connections 6b and 6c. The body 6 is articulated with a connecting rod 18 through a self-aligning ball journal 16. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 1 is mounted on pillars 20, and the ends of the connecting rod 18 are journalled on adjustable throw eccentrics 25 which are carried by shafts 22, which are interconnected by sprockets 24 and chain 23, and adapted to be driven by means 26. Closures 27, to be lined, are brought successively into a fixed position below the nozzle which is caused to describe a circular motion while the needle-valve in its tip is opened by the admission of compressed air beneath the piston 9. The apparatus may be adapted to move the nozzle in non-circular paths, e.g. square, rectangular or oval. Several nozzles with a common connecting rod drive, may be mounted on the plate 1.
