Abstract

The invention comprises acid esters of the formula <FORM:0888661/IV (a)/1> and water-soluble salts thereof, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 20 to 24 carbon atoms, X is the anion of a polybasic acid, k and m are integers whose sum is 10 to 100, and p is 1 or 2. They are prepared by reacting an amine RNH2 with ethylene oxide or with compounds containing a polyoxyethylene chain, e.g. polyoxyethylene halides, until the product contains 10 to 100 oxyethylene groups, and esterifying with a polybasic acid or reactive derivative thereof. Alkaline catalysts may be used in the first reaction, in which mixtures of amines may also be used. Such mixtures may be derived from natural fats or oils. Specified amines are arachidylamine, behenylamine lignocerylamine, montanylamine, erucylamine and brassidylamine. Others such as stearyl- and palmityl-amine may be present. Examples of polybasic acids and their derivatives are oxalic, succinic, furanedicarboxylic, saccharic, maleic, sulpho-acetic, sulpho-succinic, orthophosphoric, sulphuric, chloro-sulphonic and amido-sulphonic acids, maleic anhydride and urea phosphate. Urea may be present to assist the esterification in some cases. Uses: levelling and stripping agents in dyeing (see Group IV(c)). Specification 380,851 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises acid esters of the formula <FORM:0888661/IV (b)/1> and water-soluble salts thereof, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 20 to 24 carbon atoms, X is the anion of a polybasic acid, k and m are integers whose sum is 10 to 100, and p is 1 or 2. They are prepared by reacting an amine RNH2 with ethylene oxide or with compounds containing a polyoxyethylene chain, e.g. polyoxyethylene halides, until the product contains 10 to 100 oxyethylene groups, and esterifying with a polybasic acid or reactive derivative thereof. Alkaline catalysts may be used in the first reaction in which mixtures of amines may also be used. Such mixtures may be derived from natural fats and oils. Specified amines are arachidylamine, behenylamine, lignocerylamine, montanylamine, erucylamine and brassidylamine. Others such as stearylamine and palmitylamine may be present. Examples of polybasic acids and their derivatives are oxalic, succinic, furanedicarboxylic, saccharic, maleic, sulpho-acetic, sulpho-succinic, ortho-phosphoric, sulphuric, chlorosulphonic and amidosulphonic acids, maleic anhydride and urea phosphate. Urea may be present to assist the esterification in some cases. The products are used as levelling and stripping agents in dyeing (see Group IV(c)).ALSO:Acid esters of polyethenoxy amines, of the formula <FORM:0888661/IV (c)/1> and water-soluble salts thereof, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 20 to 24 carbon atoms, X is the anion of a polybasic organic or inorganic acid, k and m are integers whose sum is 10 to 100 and p is 1 or 2, are used as levelling and stripping agents for acid- or neutral-dyeing dyestuffs on nitrogenous fibres such as wool, silk and synthetic polyamides.
