Abstract

888,466. Agglutinated fibrous materials; laminates; paper containing synthetic polymers. FREUDENBERG KOMM.-GES. AUF AKTIEN., CARL. Jan. 30, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957], No. 3075/58. Classes 42 (2), 96 and 140. A method of producing bonded fibrous materials comprises impregnating an unwoven loose fibrous structure with a curable elastomeric bonding-agent and a reinforcing agent, as hereinbelow defined, heating the impregnated structure to produce an intermediate product in which the bonding agent is still uncured, superimposing a plurality of said intermediate products and subjecting them to a temperature of at least 100‹ C. and a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres for a minimum period of 15 minutes. By the term " reinforcing agents " is meant reactive precondensates of aldehydes and/or ketones, reactive aminoplastics and/or phenol plastics, or reactive precondensates of aldehydes and/or ketones with phenols or amino compounds such as urea, dicyandiamine, guanide and triazine or their substitution products, and ethoxyline resins, polyester resins, polycarbonate resins, polyamide resins and vinyl resins. Specified bonding agents are natural rubber, synthetic rubber, silicone rubber and acrylate resins. The bonding agents and reinforcing agents may be applied in the form of aqueous dispersions or emulsions which may also contain vulcanization agents, vulcanization accelerators, agents favouring condensation, polymerization or polycondensation, age resistors, wetting-agents, stabilizers, plasticizers, fillers and pigments. The fibres may be animal, vegetable, mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic. Specified fibres are those of bast, polyamide, polyester, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, ramie, glass and polyvinylidene-polyvinyl chloride. The heat treatment may be carried out by means of infra-red rays or high-frequency treatment. The fibrous web may be produced by carding or blowing, or by a papermaking technique. An example described the formation, in a paper-making machine, of a fibrous pulp containing polyamide, polyvinylidene-polyvinyl chloride and ramie fibres with a curable elastomeric bonding agent and a reinforcing agent. The pulp is dried, treated with an aqueous colloidal melamine formaldehyde precondensate and then hot-calendered to form a sheet material from which annular discs are stamped out. These are stacked on a perforated metallic hollow body and hot-pressed to vulcanize and harden them and form a hollow cylinder from which a roller may be produced by applying the cylinder to a roller core. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 845,418.
