Abstract

888,073. Deflecting propulsive jets. HUGHES. P. M. Aug. 23, 1960 [June 4, 1959], No. 19086/59. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A jet propulsion unit comprises a duct within which is disposed a rotary air compressor and means for imparting heat to at least some of the air compressed thereby, the air compressor being driven by an engine, the driving shaft of which is not co-axial with the rotor of the air compressor. The compressed air flows into a combustion section where fuel is injected through the injector and flame-holder device 8 and the combustion gases finally discharge through a propulsion nozzle 36 which is of rectangular form. Pivoted flaps 37, 39 and 40 are associated with the nozzle 36 for causing deflection of the gas stream, the flaps being shown in a deflecting position in Fig. 2.
