Abstract

A coating composition for pills and tablets comprises particles of purified arsenic-free shellac suspended in an aqueous alcoholic solution of methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose or sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The shellac may be present in a concentration of 40-100% by weight of the cellulose derivative, and the latter may be present in a concentration of from 5-10% by weight of the composition when of low viscosity (less than 100 cps.), 3-5% when of medium viscosity and 2-3% when of high viscosity (over 1,500 cps.). The alcohol may be ethanol, but other alcohols may be used, e.g. methanol or isopropanol. A plasticizer, e.g. propylene glycol, glycerin, or polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 200-600, may be added in an amount of 1-3 g. per 100 g. of composition. Other specified plasticizers include cotton seed oil and corn oil. Conventional colouring, sweetening, flavouring and opacifying agents may be added.ALSO:A coating composition for pills and tablets comprises particles of purified arsenic-free shellac suspended in an aqueous alcoholic solution of methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose or sodium carboxymethylcellulose.
