Abstract
A binding agent for welding electrode coatings comprises a homogeneous mixture of finely-ground alginate and a solid diluent which is itself a binding agent. Specified diluents are starch and china clay. The agent is made by mixing together an alginate (or alginic acid and a neutralizing agent such as soda-ash), a solid diluent and water, subjecting the mixture to mechanical working under pressure, e.g. in a screw-press or homogenizer, and then drying and grinding the mixture.
