Abstract

887,286. Brakes for web rolls. [WITTON-JAMES Ltd. March 15, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 9005/59. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XVI] A web tension control arrangement for controlling the tension of a web unwound from a reel mounted on a spindle which rotates with the reel comprises fluid - operated control means responsive to changes in web tension, braking means for applying braking torque to the spindle, and brake actuating means responsive to the output of the control means to apply a braking torque dependent upon the output, the brake-actuating means being adjustable to operate in different ranges of braking torque for a given range of outputs from the control means. As shown, spindles and carrying reels 1, 2 and 3 are braked by brake blocks 28 arranged around the periphery of a disc 27. The blocks 28 are actuated by pistons 29, Fig. 2, within cylinders 30 supplied with air under pressure through selector valves 32, Fig. 1, thus the number of blocks operative to effect braking may be varied, e.g. to suit the width of web being unwound. The air pressure supplied to the cylinders is controlled by a web tension control roller 6 which operates a control valve 7 connected to a high pressure air supply. Alternatively, four pistons 29, Fig. 3 (not shown) may actuate a single brake block 28. In another embodiment, a brake drum, Fig. 4, is engaged by brake shoes 38 forced inwardly by inflatable tubes 39 connected to selector valves 32. In another embodiment brake shoes 48, 49, Fig. 5 (not shown), are actuated through a linkage 52, 53 or cam 62, Fig. 6 (not shown), by a chain or belt 44, Fig. 5 (not shown), engaging a central member 43 rocked by a piston within a cylinder 42 through a linkage 45 having adjustable pivot points along an arm. In a further embodiment, a cam 63, Fig. 7 (not shown), actuated by the piston of a cylinder 63 through a linkage 67 actuates a cam follower 64 which controls the braking action of shoes 65.
