Abstract

Polymers of compounds of formul <FORM:0887175/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0887175/IV (a)/2> where one R is hydrogen and the other hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group, and R1 and R11 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or acyl groups, may be prepared by polymerizing the compounds, optionally together with other polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds, in bulk, aqueous or non-aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension in the presence of free radical polymerization catalysts, ultra violet light or atomic radiation. Lists of suitable comonomers, catalysts and dispersing agents are given and examples describe the polymerization of (1) benzoylmethacrylhydroxamic acid in dioxane in the presence of benzoin and ultra violet light; (2) methacrylhydroxamic acid and methyl methacrylate in xylene in the presence of azo diisobutyronitrile; benzoylacrylhydroxamic acid and methyl methacrylate in water in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite and (3) sodium lauryl sulphate and (4) sodium oleyl sulphate; and (5) benzoylacrylhydroxamic acid and ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate in water in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite and sodium oleyl sulphate. The polymers may be converted by heating to polymers containing isocyanate groups which may be cross-linked by reacting with polyamines, e.g. decamethylene diamine or di-(6-aminohexyl)-amine. They may be used in thermosetting coating compositions and for binding pigments to textiles. Specifications 852,100 and 887,176 are referred to.
