Abstract

In vulcanized rubber articles are dispersed an antiozonant and, as a carrier therefor, a liquid substance which increases the concentration of the antiozonant at the surface of the article. Suitable as the carriers are liquid soaps of polyvalent metals and long chain fatty acids, liquid organic polysulphides, liquid polyoxyethylene condensation products, liquid hydrocarbon-substituted amino alcohols and liquid unsaturated carboxylic acid esters of polyhydric alcohols. The amount of carrier may be 0,1-5% of the rubber. Preferably a concentration of antiozonant of at least 20 micrograms/sq. cm. is produced on the rubber surface. Examples are concerned with the incorporation into a vulcanizable natural rubber sidewall mix of the antiozonants N N1-dioctyl, N N1-dicyclohexyl, N-phenyl N1-cyclohexyl and N-phenyl N1-isopropyl paraphenylene diamines and di-n-butyl, di-hexadecyl, diethyl benzyl, dioctadecenyl, di-hexyl, di-n-dodecyl and tributyl thioureas and, as the liquid carriers, of polyoxyethylene amine, a low m.w. ethylene polysulphide, an oleyl amino polyethylene oxide product, nickel and strontium laurates, phenyl diethanolamine, the reaction product of sodium disulphide and dichlorohydrin, oleyl amino trimethylol methane, lauryl aminoethanol and sorbitan monooleate, and with the incorporation into a vulcanizable mix containing a copolymer of butadiene and methyl isopropenyl ketone in 60:40 proportion and into a vulcanizable mix containing a copolymer of butadiene and styrene in 75:25 proportion of the antiozonants N-phenyl N1-isopropyl phenylene diamine and di-n-butyl thiourea and, as the liquid carrier, of an oleyl amino polyethylene oxide product. Compositions of the antiozonant and liquid carrier for incorporation into vulcanizable rubber mixes may be rendered powdery by the addition of an inert substance such as kieselguhr.
