Abstract

887,094. Gravity-separation apparatus; filters. PULSOMETER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. June 23, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No. 34374/59. Class 46. Liquid containing solid matter (e.g. sewage) flows in at 12 past a non-return valve (not shown) in a casing 56 and along a pipe 55 to an intercepting chamber 14 where denser solids are deposited and buoyant solids are trapped against a central filter screen 16 and an annular filter screen 18. The liquid passes on through a pipe 20, past a valve 21 which is at that time closed, and through a valve 21A, connected to valve 21, and a by-pass 22 to a storage receptacle 23. When a float 54 rises to a predetermined height a switch 53 is operated to start two pumps, of which only one, 30, is shown. Liquid thereby withdrawn at 25 is discharged up a pipe 36 and past an automatic three-way ball valve (not shown) through pipe 45, in issuing from which the liquid swings valves 21 and 21A to the positions shown in Fig. 1. It passes downward through screens 16, 18 and chamber 14, reentraining all solids, and on reaching casing 56 again it closes the inlet non-return valve and opens an outlet non-return valve leading to a discharge pipe (not shown). Only one pump need be provided. The by-pass 22 may be omitted, flow to receptacle 23 then being reversely through the pump or pumps.
