Abstract
866,136. Sewage reservoirs; filters; systems of filtration. FOOD MACHINERY & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Sept. 11, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958], No. 31118/69. Classes 33 and 46. [Also in Group XVII] Sewage flows into a tank 11 through pipelines 12, 13, 14, 18, 26, 27, the solid matter being held back by a filter 21 so that only liquid enters the tank, said pipeline including a by-pass line 24, 25 across a pump 31. When the liquid in the tank reaches a predetermined level, a float 53 switches on the pump 31 to empty the tank by a pipe (not shown), down to a lower level. The part 18 of the tank inlet pipeline containing the filter 21 is used as part of the discharge piping of the pump but the liquid is then transversed in the opposite direction so that the solid matter is swept off the filter to re-join the liquid. While the part 18 is being used by the pump, a flap valve (not shown), shuts off the by-pass line 24, 25 and a flap valve 17 shuts off the pipe 14, and any sewage still coming in through the pipe 12 spills over into the tank 11 from an opentopped portion 62 containing a filter 63. The apparatus may include at least two pumps each with its own reverse flow conduit 18 connected to the main inlet conduit 14 via separate flap valves 17, and each having its own bypass line. If only one pump is operating to expel liquid, liquid in the pipeline 12, 13, 14 can still pass the particular flap valve 17 that is associated with the idle pump and so flow into the tank via the pipe 18 and the by-pass line that is coupled to the idle pump. Where there are a plurality of pumps, they are driven by individual electric motors 34 controlled by float operated switches that are closed sequentially as the liquid in the tank rises. When the pump shown is operating, sewage and solids discharge at 58.
