Abstract

886,782. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. ELECTRIC AUTO-LITE CO. May 9, 1960 [May 18, 1959], No. 16338/60. Class 108(3). In a hydraulic shock-absorber comprising a piston 15, Fig. 1, slidable within a cylinder 10 the fluid passes to opposite sides of the piston 15 through a throttling passage 13 formed in a cylinder liner 12 which may be folded from a flat sheet of cold-rolled steel and press-fitted into a cylinder 10 of extruded aluminium. The edges of the liner 12 are cut away to produce a tapered metering passage 13 which is widest in the region of the piston 15 when retracted and closes completely at a distance from the other end of the cylinder. A seal retainer 29 with a conical flange 37 engaging an "O" ring 38 for the piston rod 16 is retained in position against the threaded cylinder end closure 14 by the end face of the liner 12. A small quantity of air is provided in the cylinder interior 6 to provide a low pressure restoring force when the piston is extended.
