Abstract

886,675. Magnetic tests. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957], No. 38680/57. Class 37. A method of determining the spacing between superposed ferrous plates, particularly in laminated pressure vessels for nuclear reactors, comprises subjecting the outer layer to a magnetic field between two polepieces and determining the field strength about the surface by means of a magnetometer calibrated in terms of interlayer spacing. Fig. 1 shows in elevation apparatus comprising a permanent magnet 2 and two ferromagnetic side limbs 3, 4, terminated in hinged polepieces 3a, 4a. The permanent magnet 2 may be replaced by an electromagnet fed from a stabilized D.C. supply. A magnetometer 8, shown in plan in Fig. 2, is slidable in a slotted brass member 9 and located between and above the polepieces 3a, 4a. The movement is shown in Figs. 3, 4 and comprises a shaft 10 journalled in jewelled bearings 11, and carrying a number of short permanent magnets 15 of the low permeability alloy Silmanal. A hair-spring 13 provides a restoring force so that the magnetic axes of the magnet 15 lie perpendicular to that of the magnet 2. The polepieces 3a, 4a are first applied to the outer steel plate 5, with the magnetic shunt 7 in place. The magnetometer 8 is then moved along the slotted member 9 until its axis is in the pole gap. The shunt 7 is then removed, magnetically saturating the outer plate 5, so that the deflection of the pointer 12 is dependent upon the air gap between the outer and inner plates 5, 6. It is stated that air gaps between 0.01 and 0.1 inches may be determined. Fig. 5 (not shown) relates to an alternative magnetometer movement using a single magnet. Specification 702,021 is referred to.
