Abstract

In a method for the dehydration of gypsum one or more layers of gypsum are placed on a continuous grate and conveyed through a heating zone in which heating at 150 DEG to 1000 DEG C. is effected by means of a chemical reaction in, or sensible heat of, gas passing through the grate and the gypsum either from bottom to top or from top to bottom. Hot gases, e.g. from oil-fired equipment, or combustible gases, may be used. The gypsum may be in layers of different granular size, and may be mixed with solid fuel and materials which increase or decrease the setting time of the resulting dehydrated gypsum when mixed with water, or make it more workable. The heating zone may be sub-divided into zones of different temperature, and the product may be cooled with air to fix the degree of dehydration. Agglomerates of gypsum dihydrate and anhydrite may be dehydrated, and raw gypsum or partially dehydrated gypsum may be added to the material being dehydrated during its passage through the heating zone.
