Abstract

A soil nutrient is obtained by decomposing municipal refuse by (a) adding water to obtain a moisture content of 50-70%, (b) inoculating each ton with an inoculum having an aerobic thermophilic bacterial count of at least 1,300,000,000 and penetrated with Aspergillus Fumigatus, (c) grinding to a range between 2 inches and 1/8 inch with not more than 15% being below 1 1/2 inches, (d) feeding the refuse to the uppermost of a series of vertically superimposed digestion cells, (e) exposing each side of each cell to natural air circulation, (f) moving the refuse downwardly to the next cell every 24 hours (g) retaining the refuse in the cells until the temperature exceeds the temperature of pasturization, (h) grinding to a smaller size and (i) allowing further bacterial action to develop until the temperature again exceeds the pasturization temperature. The refuse is retained in the cells for about 6 days and a maximum temperature of about 158 DEG F. is reached. The inoculation step may be provided by recirculating part of the final product. Small quantities of tin cans and glass bottles may be left in the reguse since they are rendered harmless by the grinding process. (see Group II).ALSO:In decomposing municipal refuse to give a soil nutrient by a biochemical method (see Group I), the refuse, which may contain garbage, glass, rags, paper, cardboard, table scraps, tree limbs and leaves, is first pulverised in an apparatus comprising a rotating drum having hammers pivotally secured around the inner periphery. Enough water is then added to obtain a moisture content of 50-70% and the mass is inoculated with bacteria and Aspergillus Fumigatus and then ground with a chain type grinder so as to reduce the particles to a size of 1/8 to 2 inches. The material in then compacted in a series of chambers in which it is moved downwardly and the final product may be screened to remove larger particles of metal.
