Abstract

A thermoplastic composition comprises an intimate blend of 10 to 99 parts by weight of a hard vinyl chloride polymer and 90 to 1 parts by weight of a graft polymer obtainable by the emulsion polymerization of 10 to 60 parts by weight of a mixture of 50 to 90% by weight of a monomeric monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon and 50 to 10% by weight of monomeric acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or mixture thereof in the presence of 100 parts by weight of a natural or synthetic rubbery conjugated diene hydrocarbon polymer having a second order transition temperature below 0 DEG C. Monovinylidene aromatic compounds specified are styrene 2,4-dimethylstyrene, p-ethylstyrene, o-, m- and p-chlorostyrenes, 2,4-dichlorostyrene, 2-methyl-4-chlorostyrene and alpha-methylstyrene. Synthetic rubbery polymers specified are polybutadiene, polyisoprene, butadiene copolymerized with a small amount of divinyl benzene and butadiene-styrene copolymers. Vinyl chloride polymers specified are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and acrylic esters. The blends may also contain small quantities of tin mercaptide, di-tert.-butyl catechol and stearic acid.
