Abstract

1,253,226. Graft polymer blends containing a polycarbonate. BORG-WARNER CORP. 22 Nov., 1968, No. 55588/68. Heading C3G. A thermoplastic blend comprises (A) from 10 to 50% by weight of a graft polymer prepared by polymerizing from 40 to 90% of a mixture comprised of (1) at least one monomer selected from styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl toluenes and alpha-methyl vinyl toluenes, and (2) at least one monomer selected from acrylonitrile; substituted acrylonitriles and esters of acrylic acid or a substituted acrylic acid in the presence of 60 to 10% of a conjugated diene homopolymer or a copolymer of a conjugated diene with a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon or an ester or nitrile of acrylic acid or a substituted acrylic acid, (B) from 80 to 10% of a copolymer prepared from (1) 10 to 40% of a monomer selected from an ester or nitrile of acrylic acid or a substituted acrylic acid, and (2) 90 to 60% of a monovinyl aromatic monomer selected from styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl toluenes and alpha-methyl vinyl toluenes at least 50% by weight of which monovinyl aromatic monomer consists of alpha-methyl styrene, and (C) 10 to 80% of a polycarbonate. Specified polycarbonates include those obtained by reacting phosgene with 2,2- bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - propane, as used in the examples, or with bis-(4-hydroxydiphenyl)- methane or 2,2-bis-(2,6-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane. The graft polymer used in the examples comprises acrylonitrile and styrene grafted on to polybutadiene and the copolymer used is a terpolymer of alpha-methyl styrene, styrene and acrylonitrile. The blends prepared also contain an ethylene oxide-polypropylene glycol condensate.
