Abstract

Quaternary salts of heterocyclic nitrogen compounds having a group -A-PO3H2 (where -A- is ethylene, propylene or butylene) on the nitrogen atom are prepared by reacting the corresponding base with a compound X-A-PO3H2 where X is a halogen atom, such as bromine. Examples are given using as base 2-methyl-benzthiazole, 2-methyl-benzoselenazole, 2-methyl-5-phenyl-benzoxazole or 2-methyl-thiazoline. 4-Bromo-butene-phosphonic acid is prepared by heating 1,4-dibromobutane and triethylphosphite and distilling off the ethyl bromide formed. The dimethyl ester is hydrolysed to the acid by boiling with hydrobromic acid. Specification 886,271 is referred to.ALSO:The invention relates to carbocyanine dyes in which at least one of the heterocyclic nitrogen atoms carries the group -A-PO3H- wherein A is an ethylene, propylene or butylene radical, the group forming an internal salt with the nitrogen atom. Examples are given of the preparation of symmetrical dyes by reacting 2-methyl derivatives of benzoxazolium or thiazolinium salts having a -A-PO3H2 group on the quaternary nitrogen atom with ethyl ortho formate, and of the preparation of unsymmetrical dyes from 2-methyl derivatives of benzthiazolium or benzoselenazolium salts having a -A-PO3H2 group on the quaternary nitrogen atom and 2-(b -acetanilidovinyl)-3-ethyl-thiazolinium bromide or 2-(b -methylmercapto-b -methyl-vinyl)-3-ethyl-benzoselenazolium methyl sulphate or the corresponding benzthiazolium salt.
