Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1,4-methylpentene-1, butadiene, isoprene, styrene and methylstyrene are polymerized by means of a four-component catalyst comprising (1) a Group I-III metal or metal-organo compound, (2) a Group IVa metal halide or a compound in which at least one halogen atom in such halide has been replaced with an -OR group, R being a hydrocarbon group, (3) a Group Va metal halide, oxyhalide or organohalide and (4) a halide, organohalide, alkoxide, alkyl, aryl or mixed aryl/alkyl of Si, Ge, Sn or Pb. In Example 24, ethylene/butene-1 copolymer is prepared using a Et3Al/TiCl4/VOCl3/SiCl4 catalyst. Other examples describe the polymerization of ethylene using besides the latter specified catalyst, the following:-Et3Al/TiCl4/VOCl3 with n-amylSiCl3, SnCl4, SiEt4, GeCl4 or PbCl4; Et3Al/TiCl4/VCl4/SiCl4; (i-Bu)3Al/TiCl4/VOCl3/SiCl4; and Et3Al/TiCl4/VOCl3/SnCl4+SiCl4. Catalyst components otherwise specified are: (1) Na, Mg, Ca, BuNa, Pr3Al, (n-decyl)3Al, BuMgCl, Bu2Mg; (2) TiCl3, TiI4, ZrBr2, ZrBr4, HfI3, ThBr4, BuOTiCl3, EtO(BuO)TiCl2, (BuO)2ZrCl2 and (RtO)3ZrBr; (3) TaCl5 and CbBr5; and (4) Et silicate, GeBu4, GePh4, Bu2SnCl2, SnBu4, PbEt4, (amyl)2GePh2, MeEtSiH2 and Bu2Sn maleate.
