885,717. Cyanine dyes. KODAK Ltd. Dec. 23, 1957 [Dec. 26, 1956], No. 39804/57. Class 2 (4). [Also in Groups IV (a), XVI and XXXVI] Cyanine dyes containing a sulphuric ester group attached to an alkyl group on a ring nitrogen atom are prepared by contacting the corresponding N-alkenyl dyes with sulphuric acid. Examples are given of the treatment of 1-alkyl-1<SP>1</SP>-ethyl-2 : 2<SP>1</SP>-cyanine chloride and 3- allyl-1<SP>1</SP>-ethyl-thia-2<SP>1</SP>-cyanine chloride.
