[Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of general formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is H or C 1-3 alkyl and R<SP>4</SP> is propyl or C 26 alkenyl and salts thereof are prepared by one of the following methods (a) by reaction of an amine HNR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> with α-halodesoxybenzoin, (b) by reaction of benzoin with an amine HNR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> under dehydrating conditions, (c) for R<SP>4</SP> propyl only; (i) reaction of benzil with an amine HNR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> under reducing conditions or (ii) reduction of an anil of formula
