[Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for testing ferromagnetic articles comprises a first transformer through which passes a conveyer belt carrying the articles so as to vary the mutual inductance of the transformer, a second transformer designed to receive a standard article, and a comparator fed with the outputs of the transformers and arranged to operate a relay in accordance with the comparison. The apparatus may be used for detecting the number of articles in a packet the mass, density, resistivity or effective permeability, &c. of an article, or differences in the effect of heat treatment. In the apparatus shown, packets of razor blades are passed to a conveyer belt 3 by a shoot 2 and carried through a transformer T1 causing a flap 6 to operate and remove the packet when the number of blades is too few. The transformer T1 is one of a pair of transformers T1, T2 which are connected to an oscillator 8, Fig. 2, and which have their secondaries arranged in opposition so that normally substantially no output is obtained from a balancing unit 9. A comparison specimen 1 is inserted in the transformer T2 to unbalance the circuit so that when a correct packet passes through transformer T1 the output is reduced to zero, while an incorrect packet causes the reduction to a lesser value. The outputs are applied to a detector circuit 10 which passes to two trigger circuits 1 and 2, pulses corresponding to the changes in amplitude and having a magnitude corresponding to the number of blades in the package. Trigger 1 is operated only by pulses corresponding to the incorrectly filled packages while trigger 2 is operated by every pulse and opens a gate 13 allowing any incorrect pulses from trigger 1 to pass to a delay circuit to actuate a flap 6 and reject the package. Suitable circuits are illustrated in the Figs. 6 and 7, but not described.
