Abstract

1,068,281. Cigarette testing and packaging apparatus; conveyers. A. SCHERMUND. April 12, 1966 [April 13, 1965], No. 15855/65. Headings B8A and B8C. A block of cigarettes, e.g. two rows of ten cigarettes each, is removed from a feed table 2 by a rotatable member 16 to enable feelers 23 of sensing devices 22 to test whether all the cigarettes are present or whether any cigarettes are faulty, before the block is returned to the feed path 2. The cigarettes are removed-from the bottom of a shoot (26), Fig. 3, not shown), by a pusher (11) of an intermittently moved pair of endless conveyer chains (6). The block so formed is received from the conveyer (6) into a slotted open-ended pocket 17 of the member 16 which lies in a gap 5 in the path 2. The member 16 then rotates to carry the block between the feelers 23 which are moved in against the ends of the block by rod and linkage mechanism (24, 25). The feelers 23 exert a control effect in known manner if the block is faulty. The pocket 17 carrying the block returns to the level of the table 2 and the block is removed by the pusher (11) standing upstream of the gap 5 in the table. In a modification, the member 16 is replaced by a slide (116), Fig. 6, having two slotted pockets (117) and (1171). Two pairs of sensing devices (122) are provided, one on each side of the feed table (102). The block may be discharged from the pocket 17 when the pocket is in its uppermost position.
