Abstract

885,560. Stapling. EVANS & SON (PORTSMOUTH) Ltd., J. April 7, 1960 [April 10, 1959], No. 12291/59. Class 89(3) [Also in Group XXIII] In tuft-inserting apparatus of a brush making machine, in which a reciprocating driver feeds a staple and a tuft of bristles to a brush stock and drives in the staple to anchor the tuft in a hole, grippers 18, 19 operate, when the driver 3 is in its rearward position, to grip a strip of wire and thereafter to position it transversely to the path of the driver and to move rearwardly to draw the wire strip against laterally spaced abutments 6 to form a staple in the guideway 8, Fig. 3, of the driver, where it is positioned to be fed to the brush stock on the next forward stroke of the driver. Driver 3 is reciprocated in a body member 1 by cam-operated lever 5. A tool slide 9, carrying cheek plates 10, 11 between which a tuft of bristles and a staple are driven by the driver 3, is reciprocated by a second camoperated lever 15. Slide 9 also carries a bracket 16 supporting a fixed gripper jaw 18 and a spring-loaded pivoted jaw 19. A leaf spring 24 biases bracket 16 so that a roller 21 engages a plate 22 hinged to body 1 and oscillated via a rod 25 and lever 26 by a cam 28. In operation, with the slide 9 and driver 3 in their rearward positions, the parts are disposed as in Fig. 1, jaws 18, 19 being parted by engagement of jaw 19 with a stop 29. A length of wire a is fed between the jaws. The slide and driver then moved forward. As the slide advances the jaws grip the wire and a length is severed by a knife 9a, Fig. 3. During the first part of the rearward movement of the slide, the parts assume the Fig. 2 position with the driver blade withdrawn from the gap between plates 6 and 10, 11 and with jaws 18, 19 lowered so as to draw the wire between plates 6 during the remainder of the rearward movement to form a staple which is left in guideway 8 when the jaws separate. On the next forward stroke of the driver, the formed staple is driven with a tuft of bristles, into the stock while the grippers grip a new strip of wire ready to form a new-staple on the next rearward stroke. Another embodiment is described wherein instead of the grippers being carried by the tool slide they are mounted on a separately reciprocated slide. This provides for the case when a long interval of time is required for feeding in the wire strips, e.g. when a large staple is required.
