Abstract

The invention comprises mono-salts of a base having the general formula <FORM:0885529/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or an amino, hydroxy, methyl or phenyl group, with a hydroxysulphonic acid of the general formula HO-CR1R2-SO3H wherein R1 is hydrogen and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, phenyl, tolyl or furyl group and contains not more than 7 carbon atoms; or R1 is a methyl group and R2 is a C1-4 alkyl group; or R1 and R2 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a 5- or 6-membered cycloalkane ring. The above salts are formed by reacting an aqueous suspension of the base with sulphur dioxide and an aldehyde or ketone of the formula R1R2C=O or a substance yielding such an aldehyde or ketone under the conditions of the reaction.
