Abstract

885,427. Belt gearing. BROOKE, E. R. June 14, 1960, No. 20877/60. Class 80 (1). A positive drive belt 1 has at least one sinuous edge 3 which co-operates with a complementary surface 4 formed on a pulley 5. A flange 6 prevents lateral movement of the belt. In Figs. 3-5 (not shown) both sides of the belt are formed with sinuous edges which may or may not be symmetrical. A plural layer belt, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), has an inner layer in the form shown in Fig. 1 and an outer parallelsided layer. In Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) a plural layer belt has an inner layer formed with a central sinuous recess which co-operates with a central sinuous flange on the pulley (Fig. 10, not shown). In Fig. 11 (not shown) the belt engaging surface of the pulley is at a greater depth than the belt thickness and the pulley has coned lead in surfaces. In Figs. 11-16 (not shown) arcuate guides surround part of the pulley and/or jockey pulleys guide the belt on to the pulley and maintain engagement between the belt and pulley. The belts may be made of plastic or steel and may include a layer of magnetic material in which case magnetic guide means may replace the above guides. The belt gear may be used in servo-systems or recording tape drives.
