Abstract

885,256. Valves. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. May 8, 1958 [May 10, 1957], No. 15007/57. Class 135. A liquid-flow dividing device has an inlet 28 and two outlets 19, 21 and when the flow rate into the inlet is small the liquid divides and passes through restrictions 29, 31, one on each side of a partition 8 intermediate a hollow closure member 3, each stream passing via the interior 6, 7 of the closure, annular spaces 16, 17 to the outlets 19, 21, respectively. If one flow, say that through outlet 19, increases the pressure drop across restriction 29 exceeds that across restriction 31 thus causing leftward movement of the closure 3, the end 9 thereof approaching a seat 43 in an end cap 14 thereby adding a further restriction in the flow path to the outlet 19. Since this movement of the closure 3 compresses a preloaded spring 25 a new position of equilibrium obtains in which the pressure on the right of the partition 8 will be greater than that on the left whilst the flow through outlet 21 will be smaller than that through 19. The reverse movement of the closure 3 will occur should the flow through outlet 21 become greater than that through outlet 19. When the flow rate into the inlet 28 increases non-return valves 34, 35 are unseated from flanges 4, 5 on the closure 3 to provide additional paths in parallel with the restrictions 29, 31, each additional path comprising openings 32, 33, and 41, 42, in the flanges and closure member, respectively. Any disparity in the flow to the outlets being corrected by movement of the closure 3 as described above. The valves 34, 35 are loaded by springs 36, 37 that abut circlips attached to the closure 3. The device may be used in an hydraulic power transmission system for a vehicle such as a tractor, the output from an engine-driven variable displacement pump being supplied to the inlet 28 and the outlets 19, 21, each being connected to a motor driving the two groundengaging driving wheels of the tractor.
