Abstract
Anhydrous detergent compositions, e.g. shampoos, cosmetic detergents, and glass cleaning agents, adapted to be sprayed from a pressurized aerosol container comprise (a) at least one liquefied propellant gas selected from saturated hydrocarbons containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms and chlorofluorinated derivatives of methane or ethane, and (b) a compound of formula R-(OCH2CH2)n-O-SO3NH4 wherein R is a straight hydrocarbon chain of 8-22 carbon atoms, a branched hydrocarbon chain of 10-20 carbon atoms corresponding to "oxo" alcohols, or an alkylphenyl radical, and n is 1-6. It is preferred that R be selected from saturated straight hydrocarbon chains of 12-14 carbon atoms, unsaturated straight hydrocarbon chains of 18 carbon atoms, branched hydrocarbon chains of 11-16 carbon atoms, or octyl- or nonyl-phenyl radicals, or mixtures of such radicals. The propellant (a) may suitably be n-butane, tri-chlorotrifluoroethane, tri-chloromonofluoromethane, or dichlorodifluoromethane, or a mixture of such compounds. The composition which may be prepared directly (see Group IV(b)), is usually adjusted to pH 7-8 by means of ammonia gas, or by addition of anhydrous mono-, di-, or tri-ethanolamine. Urea, fatty materials, mineral oil, waxes, essences, perfumes, colorants, antiseptics and insecticides may also be incorporated.ALSO:Solutions of a compound of formula R-(OCH2CH2)nOSO3NH4 wherein R is a straight C8-22 hydrocarbon chain, a branched C10-20 hydrocarbon chain, corresponding to "oxo" alcohols, or an alkylphenyl-radical and n is 1-6 are produced directly by reacting sulphamic acid with a compound of formula R-(OCH2CH2)nOH in a solvent comprising at least one liquified propellant gas selected from saturated hydrocarbons containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms and chlorofluorinated derivatives of methane and ethane, at 110 DEG C.-130 DEG C. at a pressure equal to the vapour pressure of the solvent at that temperature, the solvent being one that does not develop a pressure above 20 atmospheres at the reaction temperature, and which dissolves the whole reaction product at ordinary temperatures. Urea in amounts of 1%-10% by weight of the total reactants is generally added to prevent discoloration and facilitate filtration. Residual acidity in the reaction products is neutralized and the pH adjusted to 7-8 by means of ammonia gas or mono-, di-, or tri-ethanolamine. The solutions may be used in acrosol detergent compositions (see Group III).
