Abstract
A catalyst for use in the oxidation of olefines to aldehydes and ketones consists of an acid to neutral aqueous solution containing a compound of a metal of the platinum group and a salt of vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or copper. Sutiable platinum group metal compounds are halides, sulphates or acetates. Preferably the platinium metal compound is present in an amount of 2 to 20 gms/litre and a larger proportion of the other metal salt is present. After separation of the products and unchanged olefine the residual catalyst solution is treated with oxygen and a compound of oxygen and nitrogen, e.g. nitric acid or oxides of nitrogen, and the regenerated catalyst solution may then be recycled. Preferably the regeneration is carried out at a temperature of 50-170 DEG C. and a pressure of 1-50 atm. gauge. Examples are given of the use of aqueous catalysts containing (a) palladium chloride, ferric sulphate, cupric chloride and sulphuric acid; and (b) palladium chloride, ferric sulphate and sulphuric acid; the reduced catalyst solutions are freed from olefines and carbonyl compounds and are regenerated by treatment with oxygen and nitric acid. Specifications 876,025, 878,777 and 884,962 are referred to.ALSO:Aldehydes and ketones are produced by the oxidation of olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons by bringing the olefine or a mixture containing it, together with oxygen, if desired, into contact at a temperature up to 200 DEG C. with an acid to neutral aqueous solution containing a compound of a metal of the platinum group and a salt of vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or copper, and the residual solution, after separation of the carbonyl compounds formed and in the absence of the hydrocarbons is reacted with oxygen and a compound of nitrogen and oxygen. Preferably 2-20 gms/litre of the platinum group metal compound is used with a larger proportion of the other metal. The preferred temperature range for the process is 50 DEG C.-170 DEG C. under a pressure of 1-50 atmospheres gauge. Suitable compounds of oxygen and nitrogen are nitric oxides or nitric acid. Any part of the apparatus in contact with the oxidising solution should be made of corrosion-resistant material. In the examples ethylene is oxidised to acetaldehyde and 1-nonylene is oxidised to n-heptylmethyl ketone. Specifications 876,025, 878,777 and 884,962 are referred to.
