Abstract

Cyclopentadiene and/or methylcyclopentadiene is obtained by cracking the dimer in the vapour phase at 180 DEG C.-400 DEG C. in the presence of 0.1%-5% by weight of a heavy petroleum oil having a TAG open cup flash point above 250 DEG C. Suitable oils are Bright stocks, and cycle oils from thermal or catalytic cracking. The cracking is effected at 0-100 p.s.g. and 0.1-5 vol./vol./hr. using feed stocks containing more than 40% by weight of dimer and preferably more than 90%.
