Abstract
In a process for separating from hydrocarbon mixtures straight chain hydrocarbons by adduct formation with urea or branched chain hydrocarbons by adduct formation with thiourea, wherein the hydrocarbon mixture is treated in successive stages with urea or thiourea, in the final stage the hydrocarbon mixture from which a part of the adduct forming material has been removed in a preceding stage is treated with substantially the theoretical quantity of urea or thiourea which would be required to form adduct with the adduct-forming material to be removed from the hydrocarbon mixture fed to the first stage, the said urea or thiourea forming adduct with some of the adduct-forming material in each stage, non-adduct-forming material is separated from adduct and any unreacted urea or thiourea in each stage, the said adduct in all stages except the first containing unreacted urea or thiourea and the whole of the adduct containing unreacted urea or thiourea separated from each stage except the first is passed to the preceding stage for forming adduct with the hydrocarbon mixture. The commencement and duration of adduct formation are activated by the presence of a solvent for the urea such as water, methanol, ethanol or ketones. Viscous oils may first be diluted with gasoline, benzene or organic halogen compounds.
