Abstract

Polyethylene dispersions and powders are made by dissolving the polymer in a hot solvent therefor and thereafter gradually bringing the hot solution into contact with cold water to which a turbulent motion is imparted so as to cause a rapid cooling of the polyethylene solution to a temperature below 104 DEG F., whereby an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles is obtained. From the resulting dispersion the solvent may be gradually evaporated at a temperature lower than 131 DEG F. while undergoing continuous stirring followed, if it is desired to produce a polyethylene powder, by filtration and drying, the particle size of the resulting powder being determined by the rate of stirring during the evaporation step. The solvent for the polyethylene may be an aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon or a chlorinated compound, e.g. toluene or trichloroethylene. The water to which the polyethylene solution is added may contain an emulsifying or dispersing agent, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphonate or a polyoxyethylene derivative of a higher diamine. After the evaporation of solvent from the aqueous dispersion, excess emulsifying or dispersing agent may be removed by decantation, whereafter by a slight stirring of the residual mass a stable aqueous dispersion of polyethylene having a concentration in the range of from 15 to 60% by weight is obtained. The stability of the so-obtained dispersion may be increased by adding thereto a solvent for polyethylene having a density greater than 1, e.g. trichloroethylene. The polyethylene produced in powder form may be used for coating metal surfaces by a sintering procedure and may also be applied to fabrics and paper. The polyethylene dispersions may be applied to fabrics and paper. Specifications 515,582, 571,814, 671,968, 718,515 and 721,908 are referred to.
